Main Applications, Properties and Storage Characteristics of Phthalic Anhydride

Application of phthalic anhydride

Phthalic Anhydride is currently widely used in industries such as chemical industry, pharmaceuticals, electronics, agriculture, coatings, and fine chemicals. The national Phthalic Anhydride is mainly used for the production of plasticizers, which consumes about 60% of the total consumption of phthalic anhydride. Dyes and paints account for 25%, and unsaturated resins and other products account for about 15%. Phthalic Anhydride is an important organic chemical raw material, mainly used for the production of plasticizers, alkyd resins, dyes, unsaturated resins, and certain pharmaceuticals and pesticides.

Properties of phthalic anhydride

Phthalic Anhydride can replace phthalic acid and react with primary alcohols to form esters, such as dibutyl phthalate and dioctyl phthalate, which are important plasticizers. Phthalic anhydride can be condensed with polyols (such as glycerol, pentaerythritol) to form polyesters, which are used in the paint industry. If it is condensed with ethylene glycol and unsaturated acid, it will produce unsaturated polyester resin, which can be used to manufacture insulating paint and glass fiber reinforced plastic. Phthalic Anhydride is also a raw material for the synthesis of benzoic acid and phthalic acid, and is also used in drug synthesis.

Storage and transportation characteristics of phthalic anhydride

Precautions for operation

Perform operations in a closed system with local exhaust ventilation. Operators must undergo special training and strictly follow operating procedures. It is recommended that operators wear self-priming filter dust masks, safety goggles, anti-acid and alkali plastic work clothes, and rubber acid and alkali-resistant gloves. Keep away from ignition sources, heat sources, and smoking is strictly prohibited in the workplace. Use explosion-proof ventilation systems and equipment to avoid dust generation. Avoid contact with oxidants, reducers, acids, and alkalies. Handle with care during transport to prevent damage to the packaging and containers. Equip with corresponding types and quantities of fire-fighting equipment and emergency handling equipment. Empty containers may contain harmful substances.

Storage precautions

Phthalic Anhydride should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse. Keep away from ignition sources and heat sources. The packaging must be sealed and kept dry. It should be stored separately from oxidants, reducers, acids, and alkalies, and mixed storage should be avoided. Equip with corresponding types and quantities of fire-fighting equipment. The storage area should be equipped with suitable materials to contain leaked materials.

Emergency handling

Isolate the contaminated area of the leak and limit access. Cut off the fire source. It is recommended that emergency handlers wear dust masks (full-face masks) and anti-acid and alkali work clothes. Do not directly contact the leaked material. For small leaks, avoid dust generation, and collect the material with a clean shovel into a dry, clean, and covered container. For large leaks, collect and recycle or transport them to the waste disposal site for disposal.
